In 1936, the National Association for Colored Graduate Nurses founded the Mary Mahoney Award in honor of her achievements. Mahoney’s pioneering spirit has been recognized with numerous awards and memorials. She is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, Massachusetts. After three years of battling breast cancer, she died on January 4, 1926. After the 19th Amendment was ratified in August 1920, Mahoney was among the first women who registered to vote in Boston. However, she continued to champion women’s rights. She finally retired from nursing after 40 years in the profession. She served as the director from 1911 until 1912. At the convention, the organization’s members elected Mahoney to be the national chaplain and gave her a life membership.Īfter decades as a private nurse, Mahoney became the director of the Howard Orphanage Asylum for black children in Kings Park, Long Island in New York City. In the following year, at the NACGN’s first national convention, she gave the opening speech. In 1908, she co-founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (NACGN). ![]() Mahoney felt that a group was needed which advocated for the equality of African American nurses. The NAAUSC consisted mainly of white members, which were not always welcoming to black nurses. In 1896, she joined the Nurses Associated Alumnae of the United States and Canada (NAAUSC), which later became known as the American Nurses Association (ANA). Mahoney was an active participant in the nursing profession. She was known for her efficiency, patience, and caring bedside manner. ![]() Her patients were mostly from wealthy white families, who lived up and down the east coast. ![]() Instead, she pursued a career as a private nurse to focus on the care needs of individual clients. Mahoney was one of the women who finished the program, making her the first African American in the US to earn a professional nursing license.Īfter she finished her training, Mahoney decided not to follow a career in public nursing due to the overwhelming discrimination often encountered there. Of the 42 students that entered the program in 1878, only four completed it in 1879. Many students were not able to complete the program because of its many requirements. Students attended lectures and gained first-hand experience in the hospital. The program, which ran for 16 months, was intensive. In 1878, at the age of 33, Mahoney was admitted to the hospital’s professional graduate school for nursing. The New England Hospital for Women and Children operated one of the first nursing schools in the United States. She also had the opportunity to work as a nurse’s aide, enabling her to learn a great deal about the nursing profession. She acted as janitor, cook, and washer women. Here Mahoney worked for 15 years in a variety of roles. It was also exceptional because it had an all-women staff of physicians. The hospital was dedicated to providing healthcare only to women and their children. When she was in her teens, Mahoney knew that she wanted to become a nurse, so she began working at the New England Hospital for Women and Children. She was educated at Phillips School in Boston, which after 1855, became one of the first integrated schools in the country. Born to freed slaves who had moved to Boston from North Carolina, Mahoney learned from an early age the importance of racial equality. Mary Eliza Mahoney was born in the spring of 1845 in Boston, Massachusetts. She is noted for becoming the first African American licensed nurse. Eager to encourage greater equality for African Americans and women, Mary Eliza Mahoney pursued a nursing career which supported these aims. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is one of those “fun to make” dishes, by the way. But if your family is close like mine, they won’t be afraid to share. If the squash are large, they might be a little to big for one person. While some folks might prefer to scrape out the individual halves into a large casserole dish, I prefer to serve them straight out of the oven. The results is a soft, flavorful squash that’s dripping with all the good things in life. This is as easy as it comes: you simply halve and hollow out acorn squash, then fill the hollow center with butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, and salt…then you bake it. I’m a real squash fanatic, whether it’s pumpkin, butternut, spaghetti, or acorn (or zucchini or summer squash, for that matter) so I’m always looking for great ways to prepare it that’s a little set apart from the fray. Today’s offering is Baked Acorn Squash, something I’ve made off and on for years, and something about which I fantasize during the years I don’t make it. Cover pot and allow to simmer for about 30 minutes, or until al dente. Roast squash cut-side up on a baking sheet in the preheated oven until flesh is soft, about 50 minutes. Reduce heat to simmer and add rice, salt, pepper, and herbs. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). While squash is in the oven, pour chicken broth into pot and bring to a boil. To make this oven-fried chicken recipe, you’ll need flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika (not shown). Put acorn squash flesh side down on a foil-lined baking sheet. Oven-fried chicken goes excellent with Acorn Squash because both are baked and seasoned well. Later this week, I’ll have some special Halloween treats to share, but for now, let’s keep going with the Thanksgiving theme. This is an easy dish to make and tastes delicious. So far this fall I’ve added Homemade Pumpkin Puree, Fresh Corn with Wild Rice, Whiskey Glazed Carrots, Creamy Herbed Potatoes, and Pumpkin Cake with Whiskey Whipped Cream to the basic Thanksgiving menu we started last year, and I promise many more holiday-friendly dishes in the coming weeks. I wanted to begin cooking Thanksgiving food early this year so you’d have plenty of time to read, examine, and even practice dishes beforehand, if you’re into that sort of thing. And…the holiday dishes continue here on P-Dub Cooks. ![]() ![]() This is the technology that makes the blender quiet. All jars are made from BPA-free Eastman Tritan materials. It's difficult to say. Sex education for young people is valuable Many books now include discussions of consent and are careful to not only focus on the "risks" of sex, such as pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, but also on pleasure, safety and communication. While books like Where Did I Come From? present sex and gender in binary and heterornomative ways, sex education books have expanded to include diverse sexualities and genders - with a greater focus on race, disability, culture, and religion. Paul Venzo's research shows there are now more than a thousand sex education books for young people in English alone. ![]() Non-fiction picture books from the 1970s like Peter Mayle's Where Did I Come From? (1973) and What's Happening to Me? (1975) began the trend of introducing young people to sex in direct and detailed ways. Sex education books for young people aren't new. With my colleague, Dr Paul Venzo, we have been examining the rise of (and demand for) books that provide an inclusive, safe and engaging way to discuss the essential topic of sex for young people. I am a researcher on texts for young people that deal with issues around sex, sexuality and gender. The book describes itself as a "frank, age-appropriate introductory guide to sex and sexuality for teens of all genders inclusive, reassuring and all about keeping sex fun, real, and shame-free". Many are saying they wish they had access to this kind of book growing up. The other side is celebrating Welcome to Sex for providing comprehensive and inclusive sex education. Others are accusing the authors of " grooming" children - a term that is increasingly misused. They are also critical of the inclusion of what they term " gender ideology". Critics have taken particular issue with small sections of the book that address inclusive sexual practices beyond penetrative sex, including "fingering", "oral sex", "scissoring", and "anal sex". ![]() One side argues the book is a graphic sex guide that's "teaching sex" to young children. ![]() |
